Nutritious cafe, Taste, at Shoeburyness Youth Centre, has just won a prestigious Silver Healthy Eating Award.
The accolade is one of the 'Essex Healthy Life' Healthy Eating Awards, instituted by Essex Food Liaison Group made up of Environmental Health Departments from 14 Essex councils.
They give awards to commercial food outlets offering healthy food, or at least healthy options.
To qualify, a food business must demonstrate adequate food hygiene standards as well as minimising the level of fats and oil, salt and sugar, making fruit and vegetables available, making starchy foods the main part of most meals; providing healthy and nutritious food for children, making sure at least one third of the food served is clearly described as meeting healthy choice requirements - prepared using both healthier ingredients and cooking methods.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Public Protection, Waste and Transport, Councillor Tony Cox said: "Congratulations to TASTE for winning the award and meeting these stringent standards.
"This achievement sets a very good example to other eating places in the borough, and especially to the young people attending Shoeburyness Youth Centre."
