Southend’s grand Cliff Lift re-launch

Published Thursday 20th May 10 in Council - news and information releases news

We have lift-off! Southend seafront’s historic Cliff Lift is being officially re-opened on Tuesday 25h May, following an extensive £650,000 refurbishment.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor Ann Holland will undertake the special opening ceremony at 11am at the lower station on Western Esplanade, Southend.

This restored 98-year-old Cliff Lift - one of only 26 similar structures in the country - will make it easier for people to travel between the seafront and the Clifftown Conservation Area.

During the summer season it will operate daily between 10am and 5.45pm and will cost 50p per trip.

This is a long-awaited return of the much-loved funicular lift which needed major structural steel works to replace corroded sections.

It has been restored as closely as possible to its original 1912 format, while also complying with 21st Century safety stands.

The lift has new rail lines, new brakes, a new motor and new controls. During these works, the lift carriage was removed and totally refurbished, before being dramatically lifted back into position on the tracks.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture, Councillor Derek Jarvis says: "Our historic Cliff Lift is a very important part of Southend's heritage, so we are delighted to see it back in action. Residents and visitors have been taking a great interest in the progress of its refurbishment, so we know they will welcome its return.

"We hope as many people as possible will take advantage of this chance to enjoy a unique form of travel."
