Three young volunteers have been shortlisted for national awards

Three intrepid Southend people have been shortlisted for the national ‘Mix It Up’ award ready for the finals tomorrow night (Wednesday 2nd November).

A National Citizen Service and Catch-22 NCS partnership, 'Mix It Up' is a fun, yet challenging summer programme for young people.

Against tough national competition, some of Southend's own young volunteers have been recognised for their hard work and dedication.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Children and Learning, Councillor Mark Flewitt said: "We are delighted that the achievements of our local volunteers are being recognised and celebrated nationally.

"These individuals work very hard indeed for the good of everyone in the community and are a wonderful example to others. We wish them the very best of luck for the finals."

Melanie Bax and Sarah Considine, from architectural and design backgrounds, are up for the 'Best Community Supporter' award for their 'We Heart the Suburbs' programme.

They believe that the suburban social change is available through design and that local collaboration is the key to achieving this.

They want to celebrate the suburbs by helping it create its own cultural identity.

As a result, with the help of the local community and young volunteers, the Cluny Summer Pavilion, in Cluny Park, Southend, was created and opened in just five days.

It now has many uses such as being a stage for local events, a venue for dance workshops, and even a climbing frame for children. It brings the community together and dispels misconceptions of suburbia.

Our other local nominee, Charlotte Olden, 17, has been shortlisted for the 'Inspiring Individual' award.

As well as also helping to build the Cluny Summer Pavilion, Charlotte was involved in many volunteer programmes this summer, including the newly-formed St Luke's Youth Community Challenge (SLYCC).

Her leadership and communication skills meant that a SLYCC bank account was opened so they were able to start fund-raising for the community.

Charlotte and her team have organised curry evenings, Christmas meals for the elderly, and re-painted play equipment in Cluny Square, Southend.

The 'Mix It Up' Catch-22 NCS awards take place in London tomorrow Wednesday 2nd November, hosted by BBC Radio One DJ, Reggie Yates. NCS patron HRH the Princess Royal will also be making a visit to praise and commend the nominees herself.

The full shortlist of nominees and awards can be found on the Catch 22 NCS blog at: http://www.catch22ncs.wordpress.com/
