Southend residents can now recycle aerosol cans in their pink recycling sacks

Stay green and keep in the pink!

Now for the first time, Southend residents can recycle empty aerosol cans in their pink recycling sacks - as well as the other items they are already recycling.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and recycling and waste contractor Cory Environmental have just announced this added recycling bonus.

The extension to the service means that residents can recycle even more via their pink recycling sacks and reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill.

Once collected by Cory Environmental, the pink recycling sacks are taken by Cory Environmental to a Materials Recovery Facility (known as a MRF) in East London.

Here recyclable items within the pink recycling sacks are separated, generating fifteen different material streams for recycling.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Public Protection, Waste and Transport, Councillor Tony Cox said, 'We are delighted that aerosols can now be processed for recycling and that residents can recycle even more of their waste.

"Recycling aerosols will count towards Southend reaching the target of a 60 per recycling rate by 2015."

Aerosols join a wide range of materials that Southend residents can already recycle.

These include: all paper and card, glass bottles and jars, aluminium and steel items such as food and drink cans and biscuit tins, cartons and a range of household plastic packaging, including plastic film and cling film, meat trays and fruit punnets, takeaway containers and plastic bottles.
