Hamstel pupils are being encouraged to wear light coloured clothing for a winter road safety campaign

Pupils at Hamstel School are set to be a bright sight tomorrow, Thursday 17th November!

They are due to turn up wearing light-coloured clothing, for a special 'Brighten Yourself Up' day.

This is part of a campaign to show how vital it is to be clearly seen as winter draws on, with fewer daylight hours and often reduced visibility in the morning and evenings.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council 's Executive Council lor for Public Protection, Waste and Transport, Council lor Tony Cox said: "Walkers and cyclists can significantly improve their own safety just by wearing light coloured clothing, so drivers can see them more easily.

"It is essential for people to do all they can to make themselves as visible as possible to drivers. Cyclists also must make sure they have lights and reflectors fitted to their bikes."

Last week, Sustrans Bike It Officer, Graham Pearl - who works with the Council 's Sustainable Transport team, to help increase the numbers of children cycling to school - visited Hamstel to explain how walkers and cyclists can 'Be Safe Be Seen', and why this is so important.

Bike It Officer, Graham, then challenged the children and staff to prove they were paying attention and as an incentive will be awarding prizes to anyone 'Brightened Up'.

Graham will be joined by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council 's Marketing and Promotions Manager for the Local Sustainable Transport Team, Collette Kemp .
