Is your car ready for winter?

Road Safety Officers from Southend-on-Sea Borough Council have launched their 2011 Winter Driving campaign to help keep motorists and their passengers safe.

Drivers are being urged to make sure their vehicles are equipped to deal with the expected harsh winter weather conditions in a bid to help reduce road traffic accidents.

Members of the campaign will be on hand to offer advice on the ground floor of the Civic Centre in Victoria Avenue between 11am and 2pm on Monday 21st November.

They will be distributing leaflets giving guidance on driving in severe weather as well as handing out free ice scrapers and vouchers for free tyre checks at Alley Cat Tyres.

Regular vehicle servicing and checking of anti-freeze levels, bulbs and tyres can help you and others stay safe and cut down the risk of breaking down on the road.

It is also recommended that you keep an emergency kit in your car. This should include items such as a torch, warm clothes, jump leads, maps and de-icer.

Drivers should also ensure their windscreens are completely clear of ice BEFORE they begin their journey as well as clearing snow and ice from their car roof.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Public Protection, Waste and Transport, Councillor Tony Cox, said: "Everyone should be going to all necessary lengths to keep themselves and other road users safe this winter.

"It's important to remember how dangerous adverse weather conditions are. Simple vehicles checks can ensure that you don't break down and put yourself in danger."

The Road Safety Team will also be visiting Asda in North Shoebury Road, Southend, on Tuesday 22nd November from 10am to 3pm.

Their next stop will be Waitrose in Fossetts Way, Eastern Avenue, Southend, on Wednesday 23rd November and Thursday 24th November from 10am to 5pm.
