Schoolchildren take part in whip planting programme.

Excited youngsters from Blenheim Primary School are preparing to plant hundreds of small trees, called whips, in Blenheim Park.

They are joining Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Parks Team to help enhance the park for future generations, and are following a similar enterprise undertaken by St George's Primary School pupils at Shoebury Park earlier in the week.

The Council's Executive Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Derek Jarvis, said: "Children from these two schools will together be helping to plant around 1,000 small trees in the borough.

"This is a great opportunity for them to learn about different habitats, what plants need to be able to grow, how we live with plants, and how to look for signs of Spring

"We have been working with schoolchildren throughout Southend for tree-planting projects for many years, and they are always very keen to see how their trees develop."

Among the species being planted will be field maple, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn and bird cherry.
