A South Essex community group has had its innovative gardening project recognised with an award from a national newspaper.
The Southend Branch of the Huntington's Disease Association won the Telegraph's Gardening Against the Odds 2011 award in recognition of their work on the allotments in Sherbourne Gardens.
The awards honour ordinary gardeners whose efforts inspire people and revitalise communities.
The Sherbourne allotment project was set up in 2009 and gives members of the Association somewhere to go and enjoy fresh air, good company, as well as the fruits of their labours.
Project manager Pat Nelson explained: "Whatever we grow at the allotment is given out to our members at our weekly group meetings to help them maintain a healthy diet, which is very important in treating Huntington's.
"It's not all about digging though, the allotment is about friendship and a sense of belonging.
"Those that are able to can do a bit of weeding, planting and picking the fruit and vegetables, or they can sit in the lovely fresh air, watch the world go by and have a chat to other members."
Huntington's Disease, which is often called HD, is a hereditary disorder of the central nervous system that usually develops in adulthood.
Projects such as the Sherbourne allotment is just one part of the huge range of support the Southend HD Association offers in helping those with HD, their families and carers.
Pat added: "We want anyone directly or indirectly affected by HD to know that they are not alone. We're here to help and support them in any way we can.
"As well as gardening at the allotment we have social events there too, with barbecues, scarecrow making days and a bonfire night, and we make sure everyone has a lovely time.
"We also hold meetings every Thursday at the Ecko Club in Southend between 11am and 1pm where members can take part in relaxation and exercise classes.
"We have started training some members of the group in head massage and reflexology to incorporate into the sessions as this is beneficial for HD sufferers.
"As well as this, we hold quiz nights, music nights and a fabulous fete to help raise money, so it's a very active group to be involved in.
"If you, or someone you know, is affected by Huntington's Disease, please get in touch, we CAN help and we have all been in the same situation. One phone call could change your life."
The Southend HD Association allotment is open every Wednesday from 10am. The Association also meets every Thursday at the Ecko Club in Southend between 11am and 1pm, new members will receive a warm welcome.
