Southend residents called to waste less for Recycle Week
Published Thursday 24th June 10 in Council - news and information releases news
This week is Recycle Week, where Southend residents have a golden opportunity to learn more about recycling and how to waste less.
All week there's a chance to win a digital stereo clock radio with iPod docking station and an eco kettle in a special recycling contest. To enter, complete a pledge card at one of the Recycle Week events and commit to recycling your waste electrical and electronic equipment at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
On Friday 25th and Saturday 26th June, staff from Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Cory Environmental will be in Southend High Street offering advice and carrying out a food waste recycling survey. There will also be a recycling stall in the foyer of the Civic Centre in Victoria Avenue offering a wide range of information about recycling in the Borough.
Green-minded residents are being recruited to encourage their friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to recycle and do their bit for the future of the planet. If you would like to find out more about becoming a local Recycling Champion please call Rutendo Chitiga on 07894-515875 or e-mail Rutendochitiga@sauceconsultancy.co.uk.
As part of the Recycling Champion scheme, trained Champions will have the opportunity to visit the Bywaters Materials Recovery Facility in Bow, east London , the largest undercover recycling facility in London , on Friday 25th June.
This is where Southend's pink sack recycling is taken to be sorted before getting sent to UK companies to be re-used. Residents will be able to witness first-hand what happens to the recyclable materials they present each week.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Waste,
Councillor Tony Cox, said: "Recycle Week is a great time for us all to think about recycling more and wasting less. I hope residents will come and speak to us at our Recycle Week events and take the opportunity to share their views, have their recycling queries answered and learn more about how we can work together to recycle 60 per cent by 2015."
Emma Cheesman, Recycling Services Manager at Cory Environmental, said: "This is an excellent chance for residents in Southend to see that the rubbish they take such care to sort really does have a second life. This knowledge will provide a further incentive for residents to take part in the kerbside recycling scheme."
