Warwick Lodge - former winner of Design Awards.

New buildings and development schemes across the Borough are being encouraged to submit entries for the Southend Design Awards.

The hotly contested awards have been organised annually by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council since 1994, and aim to recognise and encourage excellence in local development.

Awards are available in four categories - new development, conservation, sustainable development and small projects.

There will also be commendations for design schemes which are singled out for special praise.

Winners will be awarded with plaques to attach to the successful buildings and certificates will be presented to the architects, developers and owners.

Entries for the awards can be made for new developments or refurbishment schemes, but planning permission should have been granted recently by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.

They should be mounted on one or two sheets of A1 or A2 card suitable for exhibiting and include plans, elevations, perspectives and photographs. All entries should be accompanied by a completed application form.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Planning and Transport, Councillor Mark Flewitt, said: "This competition is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the architectural ideas and innovations across the town.

"These are a credit to Southend and help us to develop our current and future heritage. We have had some extremely varied and distinguished winners in the past, and we look forward to an exciting collection of entries this year."

Previous winners of the awards have included South Essex College , Warwick Lodge Dental Care Centre and the Southend Pier Entrance.

Application forms can be downloaded from the Design Award Scheme webpage of the Council's website at www.southend.gov.uk/designawards  or by calling 01702-215004, ext 5408.

Hard copies of the application form are also available from this number.

The closing date for applications is 19th July.
