A model Olympic torch bearer is ready for action at the entrance to Southend Pier!
The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor Sally Carr, was today, Thursday 5th July, officially introduced to the model figure made of out willow, by artist Agata Mantaj.
Agata, who works for Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Parks team, has created a spectacular series of Olympic-inspired willow figures.
In addition to the special torch bearer at the Pier entrance, four athletic model figures adorn the flower beds outside Southend Civic Centre, in Victoria Avenue, Southend, and more are currently being exhibited at the Royal Horticultural Society's Hampton Court Flower Show.
These will be returned to Southend after the show and displayed around the borough.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture, Councillor Derek Jarvis said: "The unique willow figures will remind residents and visitors of London 2012 excitements
"It is very apt that these figures are an artistic representation of sports people, because London 2012 celebrates a wide reach of sporting and cultural activities, which I hope will inspire people of all ages to make a commitment to go the extra mile to make the Legacy of the 2012 Olympics a reality."
