Active 50+ festivals have encouraged older people to get fit

Southend residents aged 50 and over had great fun trying different ways to keep fit at a series of free monthly Active 50+ festivals.

The latest festival last month saw nearly 100 people take part in a Jubilee-themed knees up, with seated exercises classes, cycling, short tennis, badminton, health checks undertaken by NHS South East Essex Health Trainer Service, and much more.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Derek Jarvis said: "These events were an excellent way to encourage residents aged 50+, to boost their health and wellbeing by taking part in sport and physical activity.

"They were also able to find out more about future fitness sessions at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre and other community venues."

The success of the Active 50+ Festivals has encouraged older people to continue attending fitness classes regularly.

Southend Libraries also gave away free mood-boosting bookmarks and booklists, packed with reading ideas designed to help promote positive mental health, reduce stress levels and give a mood-improving pick-me-up.
