The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor Sally Carr paid tribute to Tony Tomassi, a Freeman of the Borough, who died last night.
Councillor Carr said: "We are very sorry indeed to hear of this very sad news and we send our sincere condolences to his family.
"Mr Tomassi made a huge and lasting contribution to Southend, through his thriving family restaurant in the High Street.
"He was made a Freeman of the Borough in 2000 for outstanding achievements in the business world and for his promotion of the Borough of Southend-on-Sea over a long period.
"He would always be at the door of Tomassi's with a friendly welcoming greeting.
"He was such a lively character who absolutely loved Southend and made the town his own."
