Zeppelins Over Southend Exhibition

An exciting and very moving exhibition about the lives and times of people in south-east Essex with much original and newly researched material. Southend was one of the first towns in Britain to be bombed (by the infamous Zeppelins) and was the location of a large military hospital treating soldiers from the Western Front. The exhibition will include objects, film, audio clips and many photographs not previously shown. A book to accompany the exhibition will be available. Special schools presentations are planned to accompany the exhibition.

Come along to our drop-in studio where you can work with our artist tutor and photographer Judy Payne to take a portrait or yourself, your family or your friends. Be inspired by Julian Woollatt’s work - there will be props but bring your own as well. You will use cable release, a digital SLR, studio lighting and backdrop. Please join us in the Gallery to celebrate the opening of the exhibition The Historians by Southend based photographer Julian Woollatt. He has taken his inspiration for the project from 20th century re-enactment events that take place around Britain. The project having evolved over the past four years, includes portraits, still lives and battlefield scenarios referring to the Vietnam War; the First and Second World Wars. During the opening, Julian Woollatt will be giving an informal introduction to the show. The talk will take place between 8 – 8.30pm. Everyone is welcome, no invitation necessary.
