This report provides information for each of the protected characteristics, (age, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion, sex) as well as general organisation data for employees of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.

Sex

  • we have a higher proportion of females employed at the Council than male staff
  • 68% of employees throughout the whole organization identify themselves as female, and 32% of employees identify themselves as male
  • since 2018/19, there has been a slight increase in the proportion of female employess, which grew from 66% to 68%

Religion or Belief

  • the number of employees choosing to disclose their religion and/or belief continues to grow with 1.2% more employees disclosing their religion/belief this year
  • Christians make up 26.8% of employees, a decrease of 2.0% from the previous year
  • 36.0% of employees stated their religion and/or belief as ‘not known’, an increase of 4.2% this year
  • 22.1% of employees shared that they have ‘no religion’.
  • 0.7% of employees identified as Muslim, 0.3% as Buddhist, 0.2% as Hindi, 0.2% as Jewish, and 1.9% chose ‘other’

  • the proportion of employees who identify their ethnicity as being White is 59%
  • the overall percentage of BME staff is 5.3%. This has decreased from 5.5% in 2019/20

Age Distribution

  • staff are employed across all age bands. There are fewer staff in the age bands under age 20 and over 65 years of age
  • most employees (15%) fall within the age band of 50 to 54 years of age, followed by the band of 45 to 49 years of age (13%). Over four years, these age bands are seen to consistently contain the majority of employees
