A guide to Test and Trace

Test and Trace will become a normal part of daily life as lockdown eases and we start to return to some sort of normality. Successful test and trace will help economic recovery. It will help ‘lockdown’ to be relaxed in a controlled way. A strong infection control strategy will also help.

The NHS test and trace service:

  • ensures that anyone who develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) can quickly be tested to find out if they have the virus. It also includes targeted testing of NHS and social care staff and care home residents who do not show symptoms

  • helps trace close recent contacts of anyone who tests positive for coronavirus. If necessarty, it will also notify them that they must self-isolate at home to help stop the spread of the virus.

Test and trace locally

Alongside the national NHS Test and Trace service, there is a requirement from Government for local test and trace systems to be established. We have worked with Essex County Council, and the Essex and Southend contact tracing service will be responsible for this from Monday 29 June 2020.

This local service is being delivered in partnership with the Public Health England (PHE) regional team, ACE and PROVIDE as well as PHE local health protection team.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent the Essex and Southend Contact Tracing Service, you can call either of these numbers to verify that the call is genuine: 0300 303 2698 or 01376 319610.

What will the local tracing service be responsible for?

The local test and trace teams will be responsible for “complex cases” in places such as schools, care homes, large or complex businesses and vulnerable groups/places.

Specific outbreak control plans have been developed with PHE, for these complex cases.

Cases in health settings have their own processes in place, and PHE will contact cases or setting directly where there is lower risk of outbreak developing.

We have also been required to submit a local outbreak control plan – this is based on three key strands: Prevent, Respond, Support
