Southend and The Great War
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council will be holding various events to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War.
Full details of events can be found on our Events Calendar.
The commemoration of the World War One has been boosted with £77,900 of Heritage Lottery Funding.
The funding will go towards a programme of events throughout Southend and the funding will also support employment of an Outreach Officer for 18 months, to work with schools and the community in a range of activities and projects around the commemoration.
Robyn Llewellyn, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund East of England said: “The impact of the First World War was far reaching, touching and shaping every corner of the UK and beyond. The Heritage Lottery Fund has already invested more than £15million in projects – large and small - that are marking this global Centenary; with our new small grants programme we are enabling even more communities like those involved in Southend and the Great War to use Museum collections to appreciate fully the local legacy of this conflict and help young people in particular to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.”
