New Mayor takes the chains

The new Mayor of Southend-on-Sea, Cllr Fay Evans has been inaugurated as the 97th first citizen of the Borough, saying that she was “immensely proud” to take up the role.

In her acceptance speech at the annual Mayor Making ceremony yesterday (Thursday 11th May), attended by hundreds of council officials, residents, family members and friends, Cllr Evans said that she looked forward “to visiting schools in the Borough to see the work of our young people, promoting the success and achievement of our businesses and promoting economic development.”

She added that she was “particularly proud to be Mayor during the Borough’s 125th anniversary year” and would work to be an “effective ambassador for the Borough.”

Cllr Judith McMahon, the outgoing Mayor, also looked backed on a very successful year which saw her raise money for Southend YMCA. She said that she had worked hard to be genuine in the role and that her highlight amongst the many events and functions was laying a wreath at the Cenotaph, saying it was “an important day that I will never forget.”

Councillor Derek Jarvis was also made Deputy Mayor for the remainder of the 2017/18 municipal year.

The Mayor will be raising money during her municipal year for Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer.

Councillor Evans biography:

Councillor Evans represents the West Leigh ward.  She was first elected to the Council in 2001 as a ward councillor for Belfairs.

She is the 97th person to be inaugurated as the Worshipful the Mayor of Southend-on-Sea.

Councillor Evans has been involved in many committees, chairing Licensing committee for many years, and being a member of Development Control Committee, the Health and Wellbeing Board, and Place Scrutiny Committee.
