Southend Pier Closed

Published Thursday, 4th April 2019

View from far end of pier to shore with train on track.

Southend-on-Sea Pier will be closed today, Thursday 4 April, due to an unexploded ordnance being discovered this morning.

Although far from the shore, the device is approximately 30 metres from the pier and so for the safety of our visitors and staff we have taken the decision to close the pier. The Royal Marine Bomb Disposal Unit is expected to arrive later this afternoon to carry out a proper investigation and deal with the situation accordingly.

We would ask the public to respect safety cordons and advice given by officials at the scene, and not walk out on to the beach to get a better view of what is happening.

We hope to have the pier back open as usual tomorrow morning and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
