The Cliff Lift in Southend, surrounded by green grass and blue skies

Volunteers are being sought to assist in operating the iconic cliff lift in Southend throughout the summer holidays.

Since officially reopening in July last year, the lift has proven extremely popular with residents and visitors alike, all looking to see the fantastic views out over the Thames estuary. The lift was so popular, the council were able to amend the operating hours from weekends to seven days a week following requests from the volunteers.

The lift is operated entirely by volunteers, all of whom receive full training. The cliff lift is open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm, with volunteers in place for four hour shifts. Each trip on the lift cost 50p per person per journey, with all the income going towards maintenance.

One of the cliff lift volunteers, Nigel, was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition of his invaluable commitment to supporting local services and charities here in Southend, including his work as a cliff lift volunteer.

Cllr Kevin Robinson, cabinet member for business, culture and tourism, said: “We are anticipating a record-breaking year for visitor numbers in Southend this year, and as such we are seeking volunteer support to help keep the cliff lift running throughout the summer holidays.

“We originally only opened the lift on weekends, however the current crop of volunteers were keen for us to open it seven days a week, which shows the absolute dedication they have for our town. The cliff lift is a special part of Southend’s heritage and we feel a great sense of pride and joy seeing the lift in operation

“Volunteering at the cliff lift is a fun opportunity for residents who may have some spare time or would like to meet new people – both volunteers and visitors using the lift. I would like to congratulate and thank Nigel on his British Empire Medal for his outstanding volunteering work here in Southend.”
