Event about shared ownership housing scheme

A free event for people interested in learning more about the advantages of shared ownership for housing at Hammond Court is being held for residents of Southend-on-Sea.
Estuary Housing Association and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council are holding the event on Thursday 1 August, so people who want to get a foot on the housing ladder by part-owning one of the 18 flats in the Hammond Court development, can pop into the Civic Centre between 4pm and 7pm to find out more.
Shared ownership is where those eligible buy a percentage of the house and also pay a percentage of rent. It means their monthly house payments go some way to paying off a mortgage, with the option to buy extra shares in the house as circumstances change.
There are a total of 18, one and two-bedroomed apartments available as part of the new development situated in Sutton Road, Southend-on-Sea.
Cllr Ian Gilbert, leader of the council with a responsibility for housing, said: “This is a great opportunity for those who want to get into their own home to find out more about shared ownership and the Hammond Court development.
“The rules have changed and there is a lot more flexibility in the scheme, rather than the perception that only key workers are eligible for shared ownership, but Estuary Housing Association will be on hand to answer any questions and advise people as to how to proceed.
“We are committed to increasing the availability of all different types of housing and accommodation within Southend-on-Sea, and this includes different funding schemes, with the ambition that every resident has a safe and comfortable home.”
The event takes place between 4pm and 7pm, on Thursday 1 August, in the Jubilee Room at the Civic Centre on Victoria Avenue, and a financial advisor will also be on hand to give free advice.
