Residents and visitors of all ages are being reminded to get their wheels in motion and head down to official opening event for Southend’s newest facility – The Skatey McSkateface.

The new skatepark welcomed its first set of users on Friday 19 July, receiving lots of positive comments, and the facility has been very popular since with skaters, scooter riders and BMXers filling the ramps each day.

This Saturday (3 August), the Council and contractor for the build, Maverick Skateparks, are hosting a fun-filled event, with demos from Alex Decunha, Team GB Olympic Skateboarder and Team Rubicon BMX rider Harry Boucher. There will also be demos by sponsored scooter riders Taylor Tait and Cobie Wenyon-Chambers.

There will be jam format competitions and opportunities for riders of all ages and abilities to participate, with some great prizes to be won.  No registration is necessary.

The event is free to attend and takes place at the ‘The Skatey McSkateface’ in Warrior Square, Southend-on-Sea. The event will start at 12pm with a speech from The Worshipful The Mayor, Cllr John Lamb, before the activities begin. The event will end at 4pm.

Cllr Kevin Robinson, cabinet member for business, culture and tourism, said: “Since opening, The Skatey McSkateface has proven to be very popular within the skating community. Each afternoon since opening last week, we have seen it filled with children, teenagers and adults all eagerly waiting their turn to try it out.”

“The purpose of building the facility was to create a space that brings people together and enables them to enjoy physical activity, whilst meeting new people and trying new skills. The opening event is sure to be a fantastic afternoon and I urge residents and visitors to bring the families and enjoy Southend’s new skatepark.”

Russ Holbert, Director at Maverick Skateparks, said: “We’re looking forward to celebrating the opening of this fantastic new facility with the Council and the local riders on Saturday.  Maverick launch events are renowned to be great fun for all who attend.”

Those attending are being asked to bring reusable drinking bottles as free water refills will be available.
