Resurfaced area to become Pitmans Car park with machinery working in the distance.

Work to create a small new town centre short stay car park on the site of former public toilets is progressing well.

The Pitmans Close site has been cleared and the council’s highways contractor Marlborough Surfacing Ltd are constructing the new 12 space car park, which will also include motorcycle and cycle parking.

Work is expected to be completed by mid-October, with shoppers able to benefit from a fixed fare of 20p for half an hour or 50p for an hour. Payment will be possible via cash, phone or the Mobon app.

Cllr Ron Woodley, deputy leader of the council, says: “I am pleased that this new short stay car park will open well in time for the festive shopping season.

“Whilst it is a small number of spaces, we expected a quick turnover of people who just want to do a quick shop or click and collect an item for example, and so this new car park will enable those people to access cheap and convenient short stay parking.

“Once open, we will evaluate the take up of these new car park spaces and continue to speak to town centre businesses to see what impact the spaces have had on High Street trade.”

The new car park will complement the 14 spaces available at London Road North which also became a short stay car park (20p for up to 30 minutes and 50p for one hour) earlier this year following an announcement made in February 2019.
