Local care workers, and anyone entering a care home have under one week left to get their first Covid-19 vaccination, before the law in England changes in November.
Currently 92% of care home workers in Southend have received their first dose of their vaccine, and 84% are fully vaccinated. This means there are over 120 care workers in the Borough yet to receive their first dose.
From 11 November 2021, all staff must be fully vaccinated if they want to continue working in a care home. To meet this deadline, the last day for workers to receive their first dose is 16 September 2021.
The rules apply for all new staff as well tradespeople, and anyone visiting or volunteering inside the premises of a Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated care home, whether they are providing nursing or personal care. This applies unless they have a medical exemption.
Cllr Cheryl Nevin, cabinet member for adult social care and health integration, says: “Although many care home staff have received their first dose, I would urge those that haven’t to please get vaccinated as soon as possible and inform their employers.
“We are monitoring vaccination uptake in care home daily and working across the council and with partners to assist care homes and staff. We are also working to help those who may have difficulty attending the walk-in centre, working with our Director of Public Health to deliver webinars to ease staff’s concerns, and provide advice and guidance through digital means, faith, and community groups.”
Krishna Ramkhelawon, Director for Public Health, said: “Care home residents are among the most vulnerable to Covid-19, which is why residents and staff were offered the vaccine as a priority at the start of the vaccination programme. It’s vital that we continue to protect residents and patients most at risk of this deadly virus and getting both doses of the vaccine is the best way to do this.
“There are a range of walk-in vaccination sites across the local area, including at the Civic Centre, so you can get your vaccine at a time and place that suits you. Please remember that to be fully vaccinated by 11 November, you must have your first jab by 16 September, so time is of the essence.”
