Seven Southend parks proudly fly Green Flags

We are delighted to announce that we once again boast seven award winning parks as the town celebrates maintaining the record number of Green Flags for the Borough.

From left to right - Rachel Ellis, Tony Little, Amy Helm, Paul Jenkinson, Dave Hockley, Ian Brown, Julie Dunnico, they are all holding Green Flag Award flags and are standing in a park.

Chalkwell, Belfairs, Southchurch, Shoebury, Priory parks all retained their Green Flag awards along with Southchurch Hall Gardens and Leigh Library Gardens. The council would like to thank all staff and community groups for helping keep Southend’s parks in top shape.

The Green Flag awards recognise well maintained parks and green spaces across the country, and Southend’s parks have featured in the awards frequently over the past few years, showing off the spectacular green spaces available to residents and visitors throughout the year.

Residents are also being urged to vote for their favourite park in the town as part of the Green Flag Award People’s Choice Award, as the Green Flag Awards celebrate 25 years of providing quality assurance marks. Of the 2,127 parks and open spaces to receive the Green Flag across the UK, 10 parks will make the top 10 and will be recognised as one of the top 10 parks in the UK. Voting is open now and closes on Sunday 14 November, with the winners announced Tuesday 23 November. To vote, please visit the Green Flag website, find your favourite park on the winners’ map and click the vote button.

Cllr Carole Mulroney, cabinet member for environment, culture, tourism and planning, said: “Across the town we have a fantastic offering of parks and open spaces, and the Green Flags really show the quality offer available to residents and the millions of visitors we welcome each year to the Borough.

“The council and our residents are passionate about the green spaces in our town, and so to match the record number of Green Flag parks is testament to the hard work of our parks team and volunteer groups, who work tirelessly year-round.

“As the Green Flag awards celebrate 25 years, we are hoping one, or more, of our seven award-winning parks makes the top 10 for the People’s Choice awards, so I would urge all our residents to vote for their favourite park in the Borough. It would be an incredible achievement to be recognised as having one of the top 10 parks in the UK right here in our town.”
