Boost day 2021: People urged to boost their immunity

Following the announcement of a national vaccine Boost Day on 2 December 2021, residents are being urged to take the opportunity of having their COVID booster vaccine, if eligible.

Bookings are available as usual on the NHS website, but Southend-on-Sea is also welcoming walk-ins (no appointment needed) at the Civic Centre. All those eligible are being offered the opportunity to come and have their vaccine and join more than 37,000 others who have already had COVID vaccinations at this site since it opened in August. The vaccination bus is also available at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre from 10am to 3pm until Saturday 4 December.

Krishna Ramkhelawon, Director of Public Health for Southend-on-Sea said, “With a rise in cases as we progress into the winter, and recent news of the new Omicron variant, it’s important we all keep our vaccines up-to-date and ensure we have the COVID booster when eligible.

“Being double-jabbed is vital, but if your second dose was a while ago it is very important to have the booster to keep your immunity up. This is our defence against the virus this winter.

“I had my Pfizer booster at the Civic Centre in Southend, which was very quick and easy. Bring your NHS number if you can, but if you don’t know it then please still come and our team will help you.

“Having the booster vaccine now will help ensure your immunity is up well before Christmas.”

Cllr Cheryl Nevin, cabinet member for adult social care and health integration, says: “We are always encouraging people to get vaccinated, but this national ‘Boost Day’ gives us another opportunity to promote the vaccine and say please ‘Grab the Jab.’

“Along with the other public health measures we have all learnt such as good hand hygiene, face covering, making space and ventilating rooms, getting vaccinated and getting the booster if eligible is vital and our key form of defence from COVID-19.”
