One road and four pavements across Southend-on-Sea are planned for repairs and resurfacing starting in August as the council continues its £10m highways investment programme for 2022/23.

A full list of the 47 roads and 54 pavements set to be resurfaced between April 2022 and March 2023 can be found on our Highways Improvement Programme page.
All road closures will be clearly signposted two weeks before work takes place. All work is dependent on the weather, as crews are not able to lay roads in adverse weather.
Cllr Steven Wakefield, cabinet member for highways, transport and parking, said: “I am pleased to see the significant investment into our roads and pavements continue, with the agreed £10m investment leading to 47 roads and 54 pavements being resurfaced in this financial year.
“We have one road and four pavements scheduled to begin resurfacing during August. In addition to this we are offering our residents a discount for dropped curb installation outside their homes, if the footpath outside the home is being resurfaced.
“We are absolutely committed to improving our roads and pavements to ensure local people can travel in and around Southend-on-Sea safely, and we will continue to invest in our roads so that they reach the standards our new City deserves.”

How we prioritise, repair and resurfacing works
The areas have gone through a strict quality check in line with the council’s procedure, which is based on various risks, and in accordance with the Highways Code of Practice. This procedure considers various items including road condition, bus routes, key routes, claims made, incidents, and flood risk.
