In this weeks blog, Cllr George talks about a site visit to see the impressive progress of The LaunchPad – a council backed project that is key to economic recovery.
I was delighted to join my councillor colleagues from Southend-on-Sea and Rochford to see the great progress being made at The Launchpad, a project led and funded by the Council and South East Local Enterprise Partnership. The Launchpad is a landmark building standing at the entrance to Airport Business Park Southend (ABPS).
It will champion real innovation in the area for start-ups and SME's. The LaunchPad is three storeys in height, and will contain a mix of offices, workshops, research facilities and break out spaces, along with a café and seminar space, and is being built to high environmental standards. The site visit this week gave a really good indication of how the building is nearing completion, with lots of finishing trades making the final touches. The building is due to open towards the end of the year.
ABPS is a vital £150m project that is already driving opportunity, prosperity and economic growth of both Southend-on-Sea and the wider region. It is creating more local employment, and providing opportunities for local business to expand and new ones to invest.
ABPS is already home to IPECO Holdings’ 124,000 sq ft unit, a Costa Coffee, and the relocated Westcliff Rugby Club. The Quad is also underway, delivering flexible industrial / warehouse units finished to a shell finish for occupiers to complete their own fitout works. The offices are finished to a category A standard.
With the current cost of living crisis that the country is facing, it has never been more important that councils invest in economic recovery and help create jobs, and I am proud to lead a council that is taking this forwards. I cannot wait to see it open later this year.
There is always something happening across our City and so whatever you are up to, I hope that you enjoy yourself. It is set to be another hot few days, so I would urge you all to stay safe in the heat and look out for one another.
