Teacher strikes in Southend-on-Sea

The planned national teachers strike could affect some schools in Southend-on-Sea.

Southend-on-Sea City Council has written to all schools in the City to request their plans, but many will not know for certain until the day of the first strike, which is Wednesday 1 February.

With this in mind, we advise parents and carers to check the website of their child or children’s school for information about whether the school is open to all students or only some.

The Department for Education has asked headteachers to prioritise attendance for examination year groups, vulnerable pupils, and children of critical workers.

Cllr Laurie Burton, cabinet member for children and learning, said: “We completely respect the teachers right to strike action, but it is ultimately the decision of the headteacher around whether or not the reduction in staff means it would be more appropriate to close.

“As the plans will differ between schools, I would encourage parents to keep an eye on the relevant school website for any updates or changes to the plans.”

Further days for planned action by the National Education Union (NEU) are:

  • Wednesday 1 March 2023
  • Wednesday 15 March 2023
  • Thursday 16 March 2023

Information about the action taken by the NEU can be found on their website.
