Southend is going yellow and blue in support for Ukraine

The City of Southend-on-Sea will mark the one-year anniversary of the horrific invasion of Ukraine along with the rest of the nation this week.

On Friday 24 February 2023 the nation will come together as mark of our respect for the continued bravery and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people.

The Worshipful The Mayor, Cllr Kevin Robinson will lead the City in a moment of solidarity, where we will join in the national moment of silence. The Mayor will also be raising the Ukrainian flag. The ceremony will start at 10:45am at Porters Civic House, Southchurch Road, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 2LT. All are welcome to attend.

On this day, the council will also be turning the Civic Centre, Porters Civic House, and seafront lights on City Beach yellow and blue.

In addition to the above, Welcome 2 the UK, in partnership with the council, will be hosting a free coffee morning between 10am and 1pm at their hub in the Victoria shopping centre, for Ukrainians to meet and support each other on this difficult day.

Cllr Ian Gilbert, cabinet member for economic recovery, regeneration and housing, said: “I am so pleased to see the continued support for our Ukrainian friends both here with us in Southend and those fighting for their country overseas.

“It is very easy to forget how fortunate we are to live a peaceful life here in the UK, which is why this moment of silence, and the unity it creates is so crucial.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank hosts, residents, volunteers, charities and organisations who have provided guidance and advice to Ukrainian refugees. I know this has made a great impact and helped them settle into our City, and will continue for as long as it’s needed.”
