Register a Death

Deaths within the Borough are normally registered within five days at the Register Office, unless there is a Coroner's investigation, which may take longer.

You should register a death in the district where it occurred.

How to register a death that occurred in Southend

You can register a death either at:

  • the Civic Centre in Victoria Avenue, or
  • Southend University Hospital in Prittlewell Chase.

In either case, you should make an appointment. Appointments are available all day at the hospital and are usually available in the afternoons at the Civic Centre.

To book an appointment to register a death at one of our registration offices you can:

We also offer the "Tell Us Once" service which can help you notify local and national government departments, the DVLA and the Passport Office when someone dies.

Civil Funeral Ceremony

We offer a Civil Funeral Ceremony which gives you the chance to celebrate the life of a family member or friend. You can choose where and when the ceremony takes place and it offers you the chance to choose a unique and personal way of saying goodbye to your loved one.

Our Celebrants (all of whom are experienced Registration Officers) can arrange to meet you either at home or at the Register Office to plan the ceremony. Some Funeral Directors will make the arrangements on your behalf.
