Southend-on-Sea City Council Armed Forces Covenant

We and the Ministry of Defence signed the Southend Armed Forces Covenant during a special event at Porters Civic House on Thursday March 7 2024.

The covenant aims to:

  • help people understand and support the Armed Forces community better
  • help Armed Forces members overcome any challenges due to their service
  • honour the role of the Armed Forces community locally and nationally
  • remember the sacrifices of the Armed Forces community and their families
  • encourage activities that bring the Armed Forces community closer to local life
  • inspire the Armed Forces community to support the broader community

By signing this, we promise to support and recognize the Armed Forces community, which includes current and former service members. This follows the Armed Forces Act 2021 that makes sure service members and veterans are not disadvantaged when they access services like healthcare, education, and housing.

Photos from the event are available on Flickr.

Defence Employer Recognition Scheme

We have earned a Bronze Award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme as of April 2024. We aim to reach the Gold standard in the future. This award shows our ongoing commitment to hiring and supporting service members and veterans the right way.

The Essex Civilian Military Partnership Board

At the regional level, we work with the Civilian Military Partnership Board. This board was set up after the historic signing of the Essex Armed Forces Community Covenant by public, private, and voluntary sectors. Its activities strengthen our promise to support and improve the lives of local current and former Armed Forces personnel and their families.

Support for Armed Forces personnel, veterans, and their families

Many organisations, along with us, support members of the armed forces, veterans, reservists, and their families. If you or a family member has served, you can access these services for help in areas like health, education, and housing. For a complete list of services, visit the Livewell Southend site.
