Help and advice for carers

Are you a carer?

A 'carer' is someone who - without being paid - looks after, gives help or support someone who wouldn't be able to manage everyday life without their help.

Who you may be looking after

You may be caring for a partner, relative, friend or neighbour who, for example:

  • has a physical or learning disability
  • has a mental health condition
  • is living with dementia
  • has sight, hearing or communication difficulties
  • has a long-term health condition
  • misuses drugs or alcohol

You do not need to live with the person you look after to be considered a carer and anyone who provides any sort of care or support (not just physical care) for a friend or relative who would not be able to manage to live independently or whose health and wellbeing would deteriorate without this help and support, can be considered a carer

Things you may help do

You may be helping with things such as:

  • shopping
  • personal finances
  • paperwork and administration
  • transportation
  • personal care, such as washing and dressing
  • going to the toilet or dealing with incontinence
  • eating or taking medicines
  • practical help around the house
  • getting about at home or outside
  • attending appointments
