Healthy Schools

The Southend Healthy Schools Programme helps schools in Southend-on-Sea to improve the health and wellbeing of pupils, staff, parents and carers of the school community.

This helps to:

  • support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours
  • reduce health inequalities
  • promote social inclusion

Healthy Schools Status (HSS)

Schools can work to gain Healthy School Status (HSS) using our self-evaluation tool. This helps show how their health and wellbeing work improves school life. This can include using PSHE and other related lessons to address healthy eating, physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing. Completing the evaluation will give schools areas they can focus on to further improve as Healthy Schools. Once HSS has been achieved it is revalidated every two years.

To extend and strengthen HSS work, schools can move on to the following award:

Enhanced HSS

Working towards and achieving enhanced HSS can help schools to:

  • identify and address local health priorities
  • make sure health and wellbeing are key areas of school improvement
  • focus on the most disadvantaged children and young people
  • encourage children and young people to have healthier behaviour
  • work closely with parents, carers and the wider community to influence healthy behaviour

Having Enhanced Healthy Schools status can help schools look at specific health needs in their community, and deliver effective, evidence-based improvements which make a real difference to the health and the wellbeing of children and young people

Enhanced HSS story

Schools can celebrate their achievements by writing the school story of their journey and the impact it has had. There is an annual celebration of schools that have achieved Enhanced HSS.
