Adverse Weather Conditions - Affected Services

Weather Advice
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has urged residents to be mindful of their personal safety during the adverse weather conditions. For the latest information on severe weather advisories please visit the Essex Weather Centre website.

When heavy snow is forecasted and temperatures are set to be at freezing major disruption is expected across the county. Residents are urged not to make car journeys unless they are absolutely necessary and to monitor local radio bulletins to keep abreast of school closures.

School Closures

To keep informed of school closures residents should refer to our School Closures section of the website and local radio station bulletins and websites.

Refuse and Recycling collection

The council also asks residents to bear in mind that refuse and recycling collections could be disrupted and to judge for themselves whether it is sensible to put bags out.

If there is disruption to collections appropriate advice will be posted in our Recycling section.

Gritting

The Council is responsible for salting and snow clearance of highways within the Borough and will ensure the major routes in and out of town and routes used by emergency vehicles are kept open. Please see our gritting section for more information.

Traffic Monitoring Cameras

View live traffic on our Better Southend - Traffic Cameras page which provides images from 16 cameras at key sites across the Borough, showing what's happening on Southend's streets. The image is refreshed every 5 minutes.

Bus services

Bus services will be operating where it is safe to do so but residents are advised to check directly with operators before travelling and to monitor travel bulletins. Please see our Bus Information page for contact details for local bus operators.

Care Services

Residents who use care services are advised to contact their care provider directly if the severe weather disrupts visiting arrangements.

If they have any concerns they should call the Council's Customer Service Centre.

Crematoriums and Cemeteries

The crematorium and cemeteries are currently open as normal. However, we advise that members of the public should only come to the cemetery and crematorium if attending a funeral as the cemetery and crematorium roads and car park remain very hazardous and both the cemetery and garden of remembrerance are still covered with snow and ice and cannot be accessed safely.

Passenger Transport

All passenger transport including Dial a ride and adult services are operating.

Libraries

All Southend-on-Sea Libraries are open as normal.
