Buy your Home

Help to buy

If you want to purchase a home of your own, but can’t afford to buy on the open market, there are a number of options available. Help to Buy could be your way onto the property ladder. The Government has created the Help to Buy scheme to help you take your first steps into home ownership.

There are a number of Help to Buy products designed to make buying a home more affordable, including Shared Ownership, Equity Loans and Help to Buy ISAs.

You can find out more about the services available in Essex and the East and South East of England by visiting www.helptobuyese.org.uk.

Right to Buy

If you are a Council tenant, you may be able to buy your home at a discount under Right to Buy.

You can apply to buy your council home if:

  • it’s your only or main home
  • it’s self-contained
  • you’re a secure tenant
  • you’ve had a public sector landlord (for example, a council, housing association or NHS trust) for 3 years - it does not have to be 3 years in a row.

Please see the Gov.uk website for further details.

Right to Acquire

If you live in a Housing Association property, you may be able to buy your property at a discount under the Right to Acquire.

Your property must either have been:

  • built or bought by a housing association after 31 March 1997 (and funded through a social housing grant provided by the Housing Corporation or local council), or
  • transferred from a local council to a housing association after 31 March 1997

The home you want to buy must also be:

  • a self-contained property
  • your only or main home

Please see the Gov.uk website for further details.
