People's Network acceptable use policy
If you want to use the Library Internet and IT facilities you must agree to abide by our acceptable use policy. This policy states that:
You must:
- abide by the library system for booking and using our IT and Internet facilities
- pay any charges for printing from the library computers at the current rate
You must not:
- create, access, copy, store, transmit or publish any material via the Internet which is obscene, pornographic, racist, defamatory, or illegal; causes harassment or offence to other users or staff; or breaches copyright regulations
- download or install any software onto library computers. You can temporarily save items to the computer, but this will be removed once you log off
- attempt to alter system settings or damage library equipment in any way
- connect any external hardware, other than USB storage devices, to library computers
- share your login details with anyone else as access is not transferable to another individual. Anyone found to be using another person’s ticket will have their use and that of the other person suspended for a specified time
You should note that:
- each user will be permitted access to our public access computers for one hour free per day
- giving out personal details over the Internet is done at your own risk
- the council can take no responsibility for the security of any financial transactions undertaken via the Internet
- the council can take no responsibility for the accuracy or currency of information that you find on the Internet; nor can we guarantee access speed
- the council can accept no responsibility for damage to, or loss of data from, devices that have been connected to the library computers
- a filtering system in in place to restrict access to some types of websites and reduce the risk of inadvertent access to sites containing illegal, pornographic, or threatening material Nevertheless, no filters are infallible, and the library cannot be held responsible for any potentially objectionable material which users may find on the Internet. If you find that the system restricts access to legitimate sites, please refer the issue to a member of staff
- a filtering system is in operation, and we reserve the right to monitor Internet usage. We may share information with the Police to assist in the prevention and detection of crime
- customers breaking the terms of this agreement may have their access to library computers removed for a set period
Children and young people under 16:
- children aged under 8 will be allowed to use the library computers only if accompanied by an adult
- children aged 8 to 11 are allowed unaccompanied computer access to sites selected by the library
- young adults aged 12 to 16 are allowed unaccompanied access to the computers and Internet
- the parent or guardian is responsible for the material that their children view. The Library Service assumes no responsibility for supervising access by children
