Southend-on-Sea City Council has welcomed the outcome of a court case that saw ten teenagers sentenced for violent disorder in the city last summer.

The council remains clear that Southend is a city that is open for business but closed for crime, and this case highlights the importance of swift police action, strong partnership working, and a united response from civic and business leaders to keep Southend safe and welcoming for everyone.
In July 2023, a serious violent incident involving a group of teenagers took place in the city centre and along the seafront, leaving at least two people requiring hospital treatment.
Essex Police led a swift and thorough investigation, following an immediate on-the-ground response. Council officers, including our community safety, transport safety, and CCTV teams, worked closely with police on the night to provide intelligence and support in what was an intimidating and fast-moving situation.
Councillor Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said: "Following the disorder, I said there was no place for violence in Southend, and I stand by that. This result shows what can be achieved when we work together to protect our city.
"I'm proud of the ongoing partnership between the council and Essex Police, and we'll keep doing everything we can to make sure Southend remains a safe, welcoming place for everyone who lives, works, and visits here."
Councillor Martin Terry, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: "We are committed to making sure our city remains a safe place for residents and visitors alike.
"We'll continue to work closely with Essex Police to keep our streets safe and secure, and we've also worked hard with the business community to rebuild Southend's reputation. Southend is a city that's open for business, not for crime."
Jacqui Dallimore, Chair of Southend Tourism Partnership, said: "Visitors choose Southend because it's vibrant, welcoming, and safe. We're reassured by the council and police's commitment to tackling crime and protecting our reputation as a top destination.
"Together, we'll continue to make sure everyone feels secure and enjoys all that Southend has to offer."
