Step back in time this weekend at the Anglo-Saxon event in Priory Park

Southend-on-Sea residents and visitors are invited to journey back over a thousand years and experience history come to life at Anglo-Saxon Weekend.

The family-friendly event will take place at Prittlewell Priory within Priory Park on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 August 2025 and will see the area transformed into an Anglo-Saxon settlement with costumed re-enactors, authentic encampments and interactive displays that offer a vivid glimpse into early medieval life.

Across the weekend, visitors can watch exciting combat demonstrations, see traditional crafts such as weaving and blacksmithing, and find out how food was prepared using methods and ingredients from the time. Families can listen to storytelling sessions, have a go at archery and potion making, speak to experts and take part in more hands-on activities that bring the history of Southend's ancestors to life.

The event celebrates Southend's early medieval roots and links to the famous Prittlewell Princely burial, one of the most significant archaeological finds in the UK, discovered just outside Priory Park in 2003. With plenty to see and do, Anglo-Saxon Weekend promises a fun and educational experience for all ages. Adult and child tickets available to book now, and under 3s go free.

Cllr Matt Dent, cabinet member for business, culture, music and tourism said:"Southend has a rich and fascinating history, and Anglo-Saxon Weekend is a brilliant opportunity for residents and visitors to explore that story in a hands-on way. Priory Park provides the perfect backdrop for this celebration of our heritage, and I would encourage everyone to come along, learn something new and enjoy a truly immersive experience."

Anglo-Saxon Weekend runs from 11am to 4pm each day. Tickets are available to purchase now on Eventbrite.
