We're reviewing the rules for taxi and private hire services in Southend and we want your views.

- proposals cover vehicle emissions, driver checks, and accessibility
- consultation now open until Wednesday 10 September 2025
- feedback will help shape taxi and private hire services across the city
Our new draft Taxi and Private Hire Licensing Policy brings together all licensing guidance into one clearer, updated policy. It sets out the expectations for drivers, vehicles, and operators to help ensure safe, clean and accessible journeys for everyone.
The draft policy includes:
- updated standards for driver behaviour, appearance and vehicle standards
- encouraging electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid vehicles
- new guidance to encourage more wheelchair-accessible vehicles
- clearer rules for operators and local booking offices
Cllr Martin Terry, cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services, said "We want residents and visitors to feel safe, respected and confident when using local taxi services. This policy update helps raise standards and make our expectations clearer for drivers, operators and customers alike.
"Whether you're a resident, business owner or driver, your feedback matters. Please take a few minutes to have your say."
You can read the draft policy and take part in the consultation by visiting Your say Southend.
The consultation is open now and closes Wednesday 10 September 2025.
