What should have been a sacred day of reflection was shattered by a brutal act.

Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said: "We are absolutely appalled at the heinous and cowardly synagogue attack in Manchester on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and with the Jewish community at this time.

"We have reached out to Essex Police, who have provided us with an assurance of extra visibility and support for the Jewish community locally."
