Day one update: New recycling and waste service on course for 53,000 collections

Tens of thousands of households in Southend have started to use the new recycling and waste service from the first day.

We are launching the new recycling and waste service this week in partnership with SUEZ and day one of the new service is on course to deliver 53,000 collections.

Residents who have their waste collected later in the week, are reminded to check their new collection days and start using their new wheelie bins.

We've also seen 22,000 residents download the Resident recycling and waste bin app and would encourage more households to do so.

The service is designed to make recycling easier, keep streets cleaner, and support a greener Southend.

Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of the Council, said: "I've been out with SUEZ for the first day of our new recycling and waste service, and I want to thank everyone for engaging with it so positively.

"We're on course to deliver 53,000 collections on day one, which is a major step forward for Southend and we've had a number of residents tell our crews how much cleaner the streets look afterwards.

"With around 60,000 properties moving to wheelie bins, it will take a little time to adjust for both residents and crews. We're sharing as much guidance as possible, so if you can't find what you need on the Southend Waste App, please visit the Waste FAQs page on our website.

"Change can bring some teething issues, and we've seen a very small number of missed collections to our call centre or affected households with incorrect data on the app."

Residents with wheelie bins can begin filling them after their final kerbside collection last week (20 October), ready for their first collection under the new service from 27 October.

Whether you are switching to wheelie bins, or staying on sacks, some households will have new collection days, so it's important to check your updated schedule. You can do this in one of two easy ways:

  1. Download the Southend Waste App for instant updates and reminders.
  2. Check the printed calendar which was delivered with your wheelie bins.

If you have any questions about the new service, please check the Council's Waste frequently asked questions (FAQs), which are updated regularly to keep residents informed.
