Better Queensway highways works begin: safer, more accessible streets for southend

Southend-on-Sea City Council is pleased to announce that Better Queensway highway works will begin on Monday 8 December 2025, delivered in partnership with Taylor Woodrow.

These improvements will make Queensway safer, easier to get around, and ready for new homes.

The highways works will focus on several major improvements:

  • The underpass will be raised to street level to improve accessibility for everyone.
  • The roundabout will be reduced in size to enhance traffic flow and make it safer to cross.
  • The unused footbridge will be replaced with accessible ground-level pedestrian crossings.
  • Underground water storage systems will be installed to manage rainwater and reduce flooding.
  • New cycle routes will link Victoria Station to the seafront, encouraging safer, greener travel.

Cllr Kevin Robinson, cabinet member for regeneration, law and governance said:"Better Queensway is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape the heart of our city. This ambitious project will deliver safer, more accessible streets with new pedestrian crossings and cycle paths, making it easier for everyone to move around the city.

"It will also create a more attractive and welcoming environment that supports the delivery of new homes while encouraging investment and growth. Better Queensway represents the next step in creating a vibrant, connected, and sustainable future for Southend."

Some temporary changes will be needed while the works take place, but these are important steps towards delivering long-term improvements that will benefit Southend for years to come.

Ahead of the upcoming works, the project team has been speaking with residents, local businesses, and emergency services to make sure everyone is kept up to date and has the chance to share their views. Regular updates are being shared on the project website, and there’s an open line of contact for anyone who wants to get in touch.

This is an exciting time of transformation for the area, and the council is committed to keeping everyone informed and involved every step of the way.
