Queensway footbridge removed - major step forward for Better Queensway

The Queensway footbridge has been successfully removed over the weekend, marking a major milestone in the Better Queensway project.

The Queensway footbridge has been successfully removed over the weekend, marking a major milestone in the Better Queensway project.

This step moves the area closer to safer roads, better connections, and improved public spaces for everyone in Southend.

During the weekend, Queensway Road was fully closed so the demolition could take place safely. The closure has now been lifted, and all traffic diversions and arrangements are back in place. Photos from the demolition are available on the Better Queensway website.

Why we are doing Better Queensway

  • Better Queensway is a long-term project designed to improve the area for residents, visitors, and road users. The work will:
  • make roads and pedestrian routes safer and easier to use
  • improve traffic flow and reduce congestion
  • support walking, cycling, and sustainable transport
  • plant new trees that improve air quality and enhance green spaces

Benefits for residents

Removing the footbridge is a visible milestone showing the project is progressing. When complete, residents will see:

  • safer routes for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians
  • better public spaces and green areas
  • improved travel and traffic management across the area
  • a more connected, accessible neighbourhood

"Better Queensway will make a real difference to our city centre. The project also introduces sustainable drainage to help reduce flood risk, more green spaces to support health and wellbeing, and improved public areas that residents can enjoy now and in the future. By making the area more walkable and attractive, Better Queensway will support local businesses and create a vibrant, welcoming environment for the whole community."
