From classroom to career: Southend Council shows students how digital skills make a real difference

Southend-on-Sea City Council has been inspiring the next generation of digital and tech talent with a visit to South Essex College's Basildon campus.

The goal was to give Data and ICT students a behind‑the‑scenes look at how their skills support essential public services and future careers.

The visit forms part of a growing partnership between the council and the college, focused on building students' confidence through hands‑on, project‑based learning. By sharing real council scenarios and involving students in live data and digital projects, the partnership helps turn classroom knowledge into practical, job‑ready experience.

Careers with purpose

Council leaders met with students and lecturer Tausamoyo Hernaes to explore how data, digital and technology underpin everyday life in local communities. From cyber security and digital access to social care and education, students saw how technology supports vital local services.

The session featured talks from Mike Bennett, Head of Data and Intelligence, Carol Thomas, Director of ICT and Digital, and Richard Warren, Business Intelligence Manager. They shared their own career journeys and highlighted the broad range of roles available across ICT, data analytics, engineering and business intelligence within local government.

Mike Bennett said: "We want students to see how digital skills are used in the real world, not just in theory. By sharing real challenges and opportunities, we're helping young people develop practical skills, confidence and a clearer picture of where a career in data or technology could take them."

Apprenticeships that open doors

There are strong early‑careers pathways already in place. Southend Council offers four ICT helpdesk apprenticeships each year, providing hands‑on experience and a solid foundation in digital services. Apprenticeships can act as a springboard into wider technology careers, both within and beyond the council, with former apprentices progressing into roles with major organisations, including the Bank of England helpdesk.

Further meetings with college lecturers are planned to align learning with real organisational needs and identify opportunities for students to contribute to live digital and data projects, ensuring learning remains relevant and impact‑focused.
