Southend-on-Sea City Council is announcing important changes to this Saturday’s Armed Forces Day event in response to the Met Office Weather Warning and forecast high temperatures of up to 32°C.
In order to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of participants, veterans, and the public, the planned High Street parade will no longer take place on Saturday 27 June. A shortened open-air Service of Thanksgiving will still be held at Victoria Plaza at the head of Southend High Street at 10:45am, allowing the community to come together in a safe and respectful way to honour the Armed Forces.
While this decision will be disappointing to many, it has been made following careful consideration of the risks posed by extreme heat, particularly for older veterans, cadets, and those in ceremonial uniform.
The Mayor of Southend said: "Armed Forces Day is an important opportunity for our city to come together and recognise the dedication and sacrifice of our service personnel, past and present. However, given the Met Office's Weather Warning and the very real risks associated with such high temperatures, we must put safety first.
"Although we are disappointed that the parade cannot go ahead as planned, we are pleased that a revised and shorter service will still take place so that we can show our continued respect and support for the Armed Forces community."
Attendees who plan to come to the service are encouraged to:
- stay hydrated and bring water
- wear appropriate clothing, including sun protection
- follow guidance from event stewards on the day
