We know many residents and motorists are experiencing significant delays in and around Eastwood, and we completely understand how frustrating this has been.
The congestion is being caused by a combination of planned utility works and emergency repairs currently taking place in the area.
Councillor Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said:
"Residents have every right to be frustrated. We delayed the gas works for as long as possible, but the number of gas leaks meant there was a real risk Cadent would eventually have had to intervene under emergency powers.
"What has made matters significantly worse is that we've also experienced emergency water main bursts along the diversion route and there has also been a power cable failure happen this morning (3/7/2026). These things simply cannot be predicted and have required additional emergency road closures. That doesn't make the delays any less frustrating, but it is the reality we're dealing with."
Council officers are working closely with the utility companies to ensure these essential works are completed as quickly and safely as possible.
The three-way temporary traffic lights on the A13 London Road have now been removed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while these works are carried out. If you're travelling through the area, please allow extra time for your journey where possible.
