Nearly 100 days on from the May 2026 elections, Southend-on-Sea City Council's Joint Administration is delivering progress on its priorities for residents, businesses and communities.

From new council homes and regeneration projects to environmental improvements and support for Southend's visitor economy, work is underway across the city to deliver practical benefits for local people and support future growth.

Quality of Life for All

  • Twelve new council homes have been completed in Shoebury, with further council housing schemes progressing across the city.
  • Work is progressing towards completion of the Local Plan, helping shape future housing, employment, infrastructure and environmental improvements across Southend.

Proud and Prosperous

  • More than £13 million is being invested in roads and pavements across Southend during 2026/27;
  • Regeneration projects continue to move forward with improvements on the high street and a new independent board being appointed to oversee the £20 million Shoebury Pride in Place fund;
  • New giant flood tanks are being installed in the Better Queensway project to protect the seafront, and plans are coming forward linked to the redevelopment of Southend United's East Stand at Roots Hall.

Safe, Clean and Green

  • Environmental improvements are continuing across the city, including seven new park and play area upgrades and Southend's first natural flood management scheme.
  • Early results from the new waste and recycling service are showing encouraging signs, with paper and card collections increasing by 46.8%, food waste collections rising by 13.2%, and non-recyclable waste collected falling by almost 960 tonnes - reducing waste and better for the environment.

Transformative Council

  • Work is continuing to modernise council services, improve customer experience and deliver value for residents;
  • Plans are progressing for a dedicated Crackdown Taskforce to tackle fly-tipping and double-down on anti-social behaviour with new mobile CCTV cameras to focus on known grotspots.

Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said: "Less than 100 days since the May elections, this administration is continuing to turn its commitments into action and delivering practical improvements for residents.

"From new council homes and regeneration projects to investment in our roads, neighbourhoods and visitor economy, we are making progress on the priorities that matter most to local people.

"There is still much more to do, but by working closely with residents, businesses and partners, we are building strong foundations for Southend's future."
