Southend-on-Sea City Council has welcomed the Government's latest update on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).
It provides greater clarity on the timeline and confirms that ministers will make a decision for Greater Essex by early 2027.
Councillor Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said: "I welcome the further clarity this announcement brings. While we have always been mindful that Local Government Reorganisation remains very much under consideration, this update from the Government provides greater certainty about the process and timescales ahead.
"The Government has made clear that it wants to fully consider the representations received before making a final decision, and we support that approach. It is important that decisions of this scale are based on thorough evidence and a full understanding of the impacts on residents and local communities.
"Southend has consistently argued that a five-unitary model offers the strongest balance between financial sustainability, effective local services and preserving the identities of our communities. We will continue to put forward a robust case for that proposal as discussions continue.
"This period also gives councils the opportunity to focus on delivering for residents while the Government completes its review. Here in Southend, our priority remains on focusing relentlessly on the services and improvements that matter most to local people.
"Whatever the outcome, Southend will continue to engage constructively with partners and Government to ensure residents' interests remain at the heart of any future arrangements."
