The electric vehicle (EV) market in the UK is developing rapidly. Many manufacturers have produced full electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Some EV charging points have been installed in the Borough of Southend-on-Sea.

Where are the EV charging posts located?
The EV charging posts in Southend-on-Sea are located at:
- Seaways car park
- Warrior Square car park
- London Road near to College Way (on-street)
- Hamlet Court Road car park
- Belfairs Park Woodland Centre (Please note: This charger is on a different system to the others. Please enquire at the Belfairs Woodland Centre on how to use this EV charger.)

What’s the difference between fast and rapid charging points?
A fast charging point will fully charge most EVs within four hours.
A rapid charging point will take approximately one hour.
There is a rapid charging point located on London Road near to College Way.
Please note that different charges and regulations apply to fast and rapid charging points.
How much does it cost to use the EV charging posts?
Currently there is no charge for you to park an EV that is plugged in and charging in an EV parking space. However, there is a charge for the use of the electricity, see charges below.
Connection fee - 50p
Cost per kilowatt hour (kWh) - 30p
Overstay charge after 4 hours - £10.00
Connection fee - £1
Cost per kWh - 30p
Overstay charge after 1 hour - £10.00
Are there parking restrictions for EVs?
There is a 4 hour maximum stay and no return within 4 hours when parked in the allocated fast-charging EV parking spaces.
There is a 1 hour maximum stay when parked in the allocated rapid-charging EV parking spaces.
Please Note: Only Electric Vehicles may be parked in EV charging spaces, and they must be plugged in and charging.
Do I need to register to use the Southend EV chargers?
To use Southend’s EV charging points, you need to register for a GeniePoint account on the Charge Point Genie website. This account allows you to use the GeniePoint web app for easy payment and provides directions to your nearest EV charging point.
